What do you think makes you a good coach?
Not all students are at the same level. A coach should be able to recognize this and also incorporate an element of fun especially at the beginner level.
What are your key strengths?
A sound knowledge of the game and two years experience as coach at my daughter's primary school in South Africa.
Why do you love Chess?
Basically it is a battle of the mind. Once you've mastered the rules it is simple yet complex. Chess is purely skill-based however there is an element of luck especially after you've moved a piece to your opponents advantage and it goes unnoticed. Chess gives you a feel good satisfaction like no other especially when you have the advantage.
When/how did you first learn to play?
My grandfather taught me the game when I was about nine.
Why do you enjoy working with kids?
Personally, it takes me back to my childhood. I feel a sense of satisfaction and joy as their understanding and confidence progresses.
What are your main Chess achievements?
Not to blow my own trumpet but I was the first to introduce chess at my daughter's primary school in South Africa. Some of my students took part in inter-school tournaments and I was elated when one of them got their South African colours.
Why do you think Chess helps kids?
Chess improves a child's concentration and problem-solving abilities. It trains them to be more focused by analyzing the constant change on the board. I believe that chess is a universal language just like mathematics and should be part of the school's curriculum.
