What do you think makes you a good coach?
As a coach, I aim to inspire my students through chess. I believe fostering interest and passion is the key to long-term success in the game. I understand everyone learns and have fun differently. By making Chess engaging and tailored to their interests, students can enjoy Chess however they want, competitively or casually.
Being patient allows me to create a supportive learning environment where students can learn at their own pace. It also helps me craft thoughtful guidance to ensure students build confidence and a solid understanding of chess concepts.
What are your key strengths?
My key strength is empathy and knowing people. I can be sensitive when working with people and I want to ensure my students' learning space properly accommodates their needs.
Why do you love Chess?
I'm able to enjoy chess in two ways.
As a player, Chess is a game that challenges my stamina, calculation, and a competitive nature. I love winning when I know I have given it my all. Although losing can be just as instructive in showing my mistakes and how I could do better. Each game pushes me to learn and refine my skills continuously.
As a spectator, I find that there are so many more ways to play chess. I'm inspired when I see others play especially professionals. They can come up with moves that I would never cross my mind. I would always look for opportunities to make those moves myself.
When/how did you first learn to play?
My cousin introduced me to the game when I was at the age of 6. I played casually with kids and adults in my neighborhood, slowly gaining knowledge and experience to beat them all. Eventually, I took to online chess, a diverse stage where I could learn the game. Through online chess, I've been able to experience different playing styles that uniquely influenced the way I approach the game.
Why do you enjoy working with kids?
When I see kids learn about things they're interested in, I feel inspired. It's even more rewarding when I'm able to teach kids what I know and love about Chess.
What are your main Chess achievements?
Back in the States, I represented Coronado High School's Chess Club as 2nd Board. I played against other teams within the school district. My online rapid rating range is 1600-1750.
How do you think Chess helps kids?
Chess is a practical tool to develop character, patience, decision-making, analytical skills, etc. On the board, you're under time pressure and constantly forced to make a move that requires that set of skills.
