What do you think makes a good coach?

I am deeply passionate about chess and have immersed myself in learning openings and mid-game strategies from grandmasters. My fascination with the game drives me to teach children constructively, helping them develop a strong foundation and structured plans in their gameplay—valuable skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

What are your key strengths?

  • Adaptability – Every student learns differently, and I adjust my teaching style to suit their unique needs and learning pace.
  • Patience – I ensure students fully understand each lesson before moving forward, allowing them to build confidence at their own pace.
  • Creativity – Learning is most effective when it’s engaging. I incorporate creative teaching methods to make chess concepts simpler and more exciting.
  • Empathy and Compassion – I strive to create a supportive learning environment where students feel encouraged and motivated to improve.

Why do you love chess?

Chess is a fascinating blend of art, science, and sport. My love for the game began as a child, playing and learning from my grandfather, a WWII veteran, which gives chess personal significance for me.

I find it incredible that, despite centuries of study, even grandmasters have yet to fully unravel the game's complexities. This endless mystery is what makes chess a timeless pursuit, constantly challenging and inspiring players at every level.

When and how did you first learn to play?

I first learned to play chess when my ever-patient grandfather set up a board on his kitchen table in Wellington. He taught me the importance of patience, strategy, and perseverance—lessons that have stayed with me ever since. From that moment, my passion for the game only grew.

Why do you enjoy working with kids?

One of the most rewarding aspects of coaching is watching children develop their skills and gain confidence. I find great motivation in seeing students grasp new concepts, overcome opponents they once thought were unbeatable, and deepen their understanding of the game.

I love helping to ignite the same fascination and passion for chess that I have. Seeing kids excited to learn and improve makes coaching truly fulfilling.

What are your main chess achievements?

How does chess help kids?

Chess teaches children critical life skills, including:

  • Discipline and patience
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving
  • Decision-making and strategic planning

It also strengthens their ability to think ahead, analyze patterns, and understand the consequences of their actions—skills that extend far beyond the chessboard and into everyday life.
